Membership Requirements

New Membership

Eligible veterans applying for first time membership should send an application to the Post Membership Committee as below:

     1st Vice Commander
     Membership Committee Chair
     American Legion Post #797
     81 Mill St Suite 300, Gahanna 43230

  1. Complete American Legion Membership Application (applications also available at the Post).
  2. Print two (2) completed copies.  Keep one copy for your records. Mail the other copy to above address.
  3. Provide a copy of your DD214 discharge (or other official papers supporting your eligibility).
  4. Include membership dues payment (amount shown on application). Make checks payable to American Legion Post #797 and annotated as "Dues Payment"). DO NOT SEND CASH.
  5. If the information is correct, membership will be approved and a membership card will be mailed to you (note: the monthly American Legion Magazine is sent to members).
  6. Please see eligibility dates below.
  7. Membership dues payment will be applied to the current membership year (ending July 31st).

Transfers

Veterans applying for transfers from another Post to Post 797 should submit forms as indicated above (use the link), but should also provide a copy of membership card (be sure to enter number on application). Membership dues need to be included if current year dues are not paid. If current dues are paid, please pay dues for next year's membership.

ELIGIBILITY DATES

Membership eligibility in the American Legion is based on honorable service with the U. S. Armed Forces as below:

(April 6, 1917 -November 11, 1918) World War I
(on or after December 7, 1941 on)
(Merchant Marines only eligibility 12/7/41 - 8/15/45)

Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

Must have served at least one day of active military duty during one of the dates shown above and honorably discharged or still serving honorably.
